SFAI alumnus Mark Alice Durant has a new book coming out this fall: Running Falling Flying Floating Crawling. Here he speaks about his art and writing, as well as his time at SFAI and the powerful influence it had on his own practice.

“It wasn’t criticism, theory, photo history, memoir, or monograph; it was all of those things simultaneously. It occurred to me that maybe I could fill a gap and publish books that combined words and photographs in unexpected or unconventional ways.”

“They were radical, they were revolutionaries at their time. They showed ideas that hadn’t been seen before. These depictions were represented at a monumental size. People were able to see themselves represented in these works.” Marcela Guerrero, Assistant Curator

Every student at SFAI has passed the wall where the famous Diego Rivera mural stands. However, not all of them know the history of the mural, and its place in the history of American art. “Vida Americana: Mexican Muralists Remake American Art, 1925–1945” at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City has extended the end date of its exhibition to January 31, 2021. So, if you happen to be on the east coast before February of next year, you will have a chance to see the importance that curator and show organizer, Barbara Haskell, gives to the Mexican Muralists.

TALK ABOUT THE DATZ MUSEUM

Open Dome with Star Trails, Caravansary, Turkey, 2004, Silver gelatin print, ©Linda Connor

“Marking the 10th anniversary of Datz Museum of Art, the exhibition of Linda Connor's photography will tell us, those weary of our endless consumption of instantaneous images, a story about the original light remembered by humankind. This will be the first story, about primordial landscapes touched by the light of the beginning. As it is impossible for a single exhibition to show the massive quantity of the artist's works and the broadness of her world, there is a second exhibition scheduled at Datz Museum of Art to tell the stories yet untold.” Sangyon Joo, Director at Datz Museum, and curator of the Linda Connor exhibition, "Reflections", in South Korea

2019 PATTI SMITH AT SFAI

From Jeff Gunderson’s SFAI Archive

In January 2019, poet, singer, writer, songwriter, Patti Smith’s fascination with Diego Rivera led to her performance at the School posting that “The historic SFAI is a jewel, a work-centric atmosphere of communal process and artistic evolution.”
